Does My Child Need to Read Before Primary 1 in Singapore?

Cut-paper child approaching school with talk listen and ask stepping stones

If your child is in K2 and you are thinking about Primary 1, start with the actual expectations rather than a classmate’s reading level. Preparation is broader than finishing a particular phonics book.

MOE’s preschool-transition guidance explains that children need not read, speak or write complete sentences when starting P1. It emphasises expressing needs, asking and answering simple questions, and talking about personal experiences. Read the MOE transition guidance.

Look at a few tasks, not one “ready” label

Choose a familiar story and read a small part aloud yourself. Invite your child to describe an event or point to something mentioned. Notice the response without correcting every sentence.

Separately, if their teacher has supplied matched words, offer one. Note whether your child reads it independently, joins sounds after a model or prefers not to try. This is an informal observation, not a scored assessment.

Turn a worry into a teacher question

Instead of only asking “Will my child cope?”, bring an example: “They know the sounds in sun but need me to join them. Does that happen in class, and what should we practise?”

  • Which sounds, words and stories are being taught now?
  • What does my child manage without a prompt?
  • What is one useful home activity?
  • When should we review how it is going?

Ask about classroom routines and communication too. Being able to tell an adult what help is needed is useful preparation alongside reading practice.

Keep home reading manageable

Pair a book your child enjoys hearing with a small practice task suggested by the teacher. Read the richer story aloud; use matched print for the child’s own decoding attempt. Do not make every story a test.

A library visit, a conversation about the day and a story told in a family language can all belong in the routine. They do not need to become a compulsory daily worksheet.

Use the coming break thoughtfully

The 2026 year-end MOE school vacation begins on 21 November and runs through 31 December. Prepare a small set of suitable books before the break, while allowing time for play, family plans and rest. Verify your child’s own school arrangements.

Calendar: 2026 MOE calendar from North Spring Primary School. Do not interpret the holiday dates as a deadline to reach a particular reading level.

When to discuss additional support

If concerns continue or your child repeatedly finds currently taught tasks difficult, share specific examples with the teacher. An educational assessment can help discuss placement and practice, but does not establish a clinical diagnosis. Choose support around the observed need rather than age comparisons alone.
