During the June school break, reading does not need to compete with a full travel itinerary. Pack something familiar, choose an occasional quiet moment and let the family holiday remain a holiday.
Keep the kit small
- A short reading passage or thin book matched to taught patterns.
- A favourite story an adult can read aloud.
- A pencil and small notebook, if your child enjoys drawing.
- A few word or picture cards recommended by the teacher.
Use what your child already knows. Travel is not an ideal reason to introduce a difficult new sequence without the support they normally receive.
Find a comfortable moment
Try after breakfast or during a calm wait, if the child is rested. Avoid requiring practice when they are hungry, tired or dealing with an unfamiliar environment. A familiar story can be enough on those days.
Ask “Would you like to hear this story or try this short page together?” Keep independent reading and listening distinct. Supply unfamiliar words when you are reading for pleasure.
Use experiences for conversation
Talk about something that happened on the trip. Let the child draw it and explain the picture. You can write down their sentence as an adult model without requiring them to spell every new place name.
Signs, maps and menus often contain complex words. Read them aloud and discuss meaning; do not assume every real-world label is beginner phonics practice.
If you have a live online lesson booked
Confirm any travel arrangements and schedule changes with your provider. Check internet, device audio and local time before the appointment. Choose a quiet setting where the child can hear the teacher.
PLA’s online phonics lessons are live 1-to-1 sessions, not recordings to play whenever convenient. Do not assume a booked lesson can be moved or attended across a time-zone change without checking first.
Notice support, not streaks
A useful note is “Read the familiar words after a model”, not “Did reading every day”. Tell the teacher if a task was difficult or the family’s routine changed. A missed practice day does not need to be made up with a large worksheet session.
The 2026 June school vacation ends on 28 June, with Term 3 starting on 29 June. Check your child’s own calendar and any additional school arrangements.
Dates: 2026 MOE calendar from North Spring Primary School. The activity suggestions are flexible family examples, not a required holiday programme.
